Una personalità per ogni stile.

Cosa vuol dire Stile? Perché preferiamo uno stile piuttosto che un altro?

Il dizionario lo definisce, tra le altre cose:

•      Un aspetto distintivo, normalmente determinato da principi in accordo ai quali qualcosa è stabilito.
•      Un particolare design nell’abbigliamento.
•   Una particolare procedura attraverso la quale una cosa viene fatta: un metodo o una maniera.  

Detto questo, per quanto si riferisce alla nostra area di interesse, lo stile è la risultante della combinazione di abbigliamento, stile di vita e preferenze culturali. Questa è la ragione principale per cui possiamo facilmente inquadrare noi stessi e gli altri in uno stile determinato da precisi canoni. Quando camminiamo per strada e vediamo qualcuno, etichettiamo immediatamente quella persona come qualcosa poiché presenta delle caratteristiche specifiche di uno stile.

Questo vuol dire che abbiamo, anche se non ne siamo consapevoli, un’ idea delle caratteristiche distintive di uno stile e, attraverso queste ultime, giudichiamo la persona davanti a noi.

Detto tutto ciò, cosa fareste se foste dei costumisti e doveste presentare un personaggio in meno di un minuto, facendo inoltre in modo che il pubblico comprenda immediatamente con che tipo di personaggio si ha a che fare?

Probabilmente utilizzereste un cliché.

Presumibilmente è quello che fanno anche loro contando sul fatto che abbiamo un idea generale di cosa uno stile significa in termini di life-style e per proprietà transitiva, di personalità.

In poche parole, se vedete una donna con la camicia di seta, la gonna al ginocchio, i tacchi alti ed una borsa di marca, senza dubbio penserete che si lavora per una Società e percepisce un salario elevato. Magari è una donna di buon livello culturale, parla più di una lingua e frequenta ambienti esclusivi. Se, invece, vedete una giovane donna vestita interamente di nero, piena di piercing e tatuaggi con un libro voluminoso in mano, potreste pensare che è colta ma interessata ad una letteratura di nicchia.

Probabilmente quest’ultima partecipa solamente a feste con persone che condividono i suoi stessi interessi per letteratura, musica o altro ma – mi ripeto - di nicchia.

Le persone amano gli stereotipi poiché gli permettono di collocare le persone in una determinata casella (so che avrei dovuto dire categoria).

Potrebbero sembrare esempi estremi ma, benché ogni persona è a suo modo unica,  resta il fatto che – quando si tratta di stile e relativi tratti di personalità – c’è una corrispondenza.

I costumisti, per fare il loro lavoro, devono fare leva sul legame che inconsciamente facciamo tra gli stili ed i tratti di personalità. 

Come potrebbero mostrarci in un fotogramma che un personaggio è viziato, ricco ma al contempo intelligente e di animo delicato? Con buone probabilità scegliendo il modern preppy style.

Intendo approfondire questo argomento incrociando gli stili ed i relativi tratti ti personalità di alcuni personaggi presi dal mondo del cinema e delle serie tv. Naturalmente non tratterò tutti gli stili e talvolta (specialmente per i personaggi delle serie tv, dal momento che gli sceneggiatori hanno a disposizione anni per sviluppare i personaggi) l’analisi potrebbe essere davvero riduttiva.  Concedetemi qualche licenza, in fin dei conti si tratta solo di un esercizio di stile.

What does it mean Style? Why do we say we prefer a particular style instead of another?

The Oxford dictionary, among other definitions describe style as:

• ·         A distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed.
• ·         A particular design of clothing.
• ·         A particular procedure by which something is done; a manner or way.

Given that, in our area of interest, a style is the resultant of a combination of clothes, live-style and cultural preferences.This is mostly why we can easily place ourselves, or anyone else (for all that matter), into a certain style defined by specific patterns.

When we walk down a street and we see someone, we immediately label that person as something because of he is showing characteristic specific of a style. 

This means we already have, even though we are not aware of it, an idea of the main characteristics of each style and by them we can easily get an idea of the people in front of us.

All that said, what would you do if you were a costume designers/dressers and you had less than a minute to present the character so the people immediately understand who they are dealing with?

You’d probably go cliché.

That’s probably what they do, since they know we all have a general idea of what a style means in terms of lifestyle and by the transitive propriety, personality. 

I mean, if you see a woman in a silk chemise, knee-length skirt, high heels and a designer bag you’ll undoubtedly think she works for a Company and has a good salary. Perhaps she is a worldly woman, speaks more than one language and likes to hang out in expensive places.

If, instead, you see a young woman all dressed in black, full of piercing and tattoos with a big book in her hand, you’ll probably think she is cultured but interested in a literature niche. She probably attends parties only with people who share her interests for a - again - peculiar literature or music or whatsoever niche. 

People like stereotypes since they allowed them to put everybody else in a specific box (I know I should have said category).

Those two may be very extreme examples but even though everybody is unique, still– when it came to style and the relative personality traits, at the very least - it is true that there is a match.

The costume designers/dressers need to pry on the involuntary linkage we make between the styles and the personality traits to do their job.

How would they show us in a frame that a character is spoiled, rich although smart and fragile? Most likely they will choose the modern preppy style.

I’m going to elaborate this notion by trying to match the styles and the personality traits of some fictional characters from cinema and tv. Of course we can’t cover them all and, sometimes  (especially for the characters from the tv-shows, since the writers have years to better develop a character) the analysis may be very reductive. I am just fooling around a bit so please indulge me.
