WHICH PANTONE® WILL YOU WEAR THIS FALL 2015

Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute presented the most prominent hues color for the incoming fall 2015. This year has been a long homage to the most significative of the last century’s decades. Where the summer style was romantic and hyppy-ish, this fall will highlights geometric design without forgetting the military or male cuts. It’ s like in Disney’s Pochaontas song “can you paint with all the colours of the wind?”. Natural is the key word. We will wear earthly, natural tones together with statement bold colours.

Leatrice Eiseman, il direttore esecutivo  del Pantone® Institute ha presentato le  tinte di maggior rilievo dell’ormai  prossimo autunno 2015. Quest’anno è stato un lungo omaggio alle decadi più significative dello  scorso secolo. Laddove lo stile dell’estate era romantico  e vagamente Hippie, questo autunno  verranno messi in evidenza design  geometrici accompagnati da tagli  militari o maschili. È un pochino come nella canzone  del film della Disney Pochaontas  “Puoi colorare con tutti i colori  del vento?”. Naturale è la parola chiave.   Indosseremo colori dai toni  della terra, toni naturali associati  a colori d’impatto.

Let’s make a step back, if you are familiar with graphic software, you probably already know what PANTONE® is. PANTONE®  is a well-known palette of colours that we use in many areas to refer to a specific point of the spectrum of the light frequency, in other words, a specific shade of a colour. I mean, in physic, if you like the frequency between 700 and 790 THz then you simply like the colour red. But, there are as many reds as the numbers included between 700 and 790 (give or take). It’s all about shades. In  PANTONE®  language, to refer to a specific hue of red,  like the one in the children’s markers box, you’d say 19-1664 or TRUE RED. Some PANTONE® palette’s tones are just numbers, others earned a name. Ma facciamo un passo indietro, se avete familiarità con i software per la grafica, probabilmente già sapete cosa è PANTONE®. PANTONE® è una rinomata tavolozza di colori utilizzata in molti campi per fare riferimento ad una specifica frequenza dello spettro della luce, in altre parole, ad una specifica sfumatura di colore. Voglio dire, in fisica, se vi piace la frequenza compresa tra 700 e 790 THz, semplicemente vi piace il colore rosso. Ma ci sono tanti punti di rosso quanti i numeri compresi tra 700 e 790 (più o meno). È questione di sfumature. Nel linguaggio della PANTONE®, per far riferimento ad uno specifico punto di rosso, ad esempio quello che si trova nella scatola dei pennarelli dei bambini, diremmo PANTONE® 19-1664 TRUE RED. Alcune tinte della tavolozza PANTONE® sono solo dei numeri, ad altre è stato dato un nome. Let’s say  - for instance – you are into pink (just like me). Which pink do you like?  My favourite pink is PANTONE®  14-1911 - CANDY PINK but yours could easily be the PANTONE®  16-1720 aka STROWBERRY ICE. At the end of the day, as you can see, although we both are into pink, we love two very different tones. Poniamo l’esempio che vi piaccia il rosa (come a me). Quale rosa vi piace? Il mio rosa preferito è il PANTONE®  14-1911 - CANDY PINK ma il vostro potrebbe tranquillamente essere il PANTONE®  16-1720 ovvero lo STROWBERRY ICE. In fin dei conti, come potete vedere, nonostante amiamo ambedue il rosa, amiamo due tinte alquanto diverse. For nearly 20 years the PANTONE® , in conjunction with the fashion week has presented the male and female palettes for the incoming spring-summer and fall-winter collections. This year for the first time, they presented just one unisex palette. This fall, instead of differentiate the chosen nuances by gender, the             “designers look to sartorial styling and fabrics to define both a masculine and feminine interpretation of hues and color combinations (MRS Leatrice Eiseman) This season you’ll be free to ransack your boyfriend’s drawers. Lots of unisex androgynous colours, effortless and sophisticate to wear. This is also the right season to dare juxtapose colours from the opposite sides of the spectrum. Be bold but remember to stay stylish. In the next post we will talk a bit about which PANTONE® hues will we wear this fall, one by one. MODERN PREPPY STYLE: smart and elegant (sofisticato ed elegante)

I intend to show you how costume directors usually try to give you an idea of  the main characteristic of a character by dressing he/her in a specific way. They assume that a particular way of dressing elicit in our brain an immediate connection to a specific pattern of personality. I think they may be partially right. In reality things are always more complicated than they appears, in fictions it may help the watchers to immediately frame up a character. This week I’ve chosen one of my favorite style: the modern preppy.	Ho intenzione di mostrarvi come i costumisti tentino di dare un’ idea delle caratteristiche principali di un personaggio vestendolo in un determinato modo. Questi ultimi danno per presupposto che un particolare modo di vestire eliciti nelle nostre menti una connessione immediata con una specifica personalità. Credo che in parte abbiano ragione. A dirla tutta, nella realtà le cose sono sempre più complicate di come appaiono ma, nella finzione scenica, può aiutare gli spettatori ad inquadrare un personaggio. Questa settimana ho scelto il mio stile preferito: il modern preppy.
THE MODERN PREPPY STYLE:
If  you are watching the tv, it goes without saying that a girl dressed this way is over the average smart, rich, classy and probably has a not-so-caring family. This people are all rich, classy and smart. Their daily outfit is probably worth more than a car. In and out of the screen, Preppy is a life style. It comes from the ’70 and nowadays is the style of  the privileged young people. The people who love this style never overdo their outfit, there is no place for sexy dresses or too much bare skin, vulgarity will never suit them. On the downside, this intelligent young people are often spoiled an like to bossy around people if not  even  bully them.  Preppy is a very fancy style: blazers, vintage jewelry, boyfriend watches and tweed jackets  are musts. The modern prep style simply add contemporary touches (like distressed jeans, flats and statement jewelry) to this evergreen elegance. Here there are 5 characters who are unquestionably Preppy.	Se state guardando la tv, va da se che una ragazza abbigliata in questa maniera è intelligente, ricca, di classe e probabilmente con una famiglia non troppo unita. Queste persone sono ricche, di classe ed intelligenti. Il loro outfit da giorno probabilmente costa più di una macchina. Dentro e fuori dallo schermo, Preppy è uno stile di vita. Deriva dagli anni 70 ed al giorno d’oggi è lo stile dei giovani privilegiati. Le persone che amano questo stile non esagerano mai con il loro outfit, non c’è spazio per abiti sexy o troppa pelle scoperta, la volgarità non gli si addice. D’altro canto, queste persone saranno anche intelligenti ma sono spesso viziati ed amano comandare le persone attorno a loro se non addirittura fare i prepotenti. Preppy è uno stile molto raffinato: blazer, gioielli vintage, orologi maschili e giacche di tweed sono dei must. Lo stile preppy moderno aggiunge semplicemente dei tocchi contemporanei (jeans strappati, ballerine e bigiotteria d’effetto) a questa eleganza intramontabile. Di seguito 5 personaggi inequivocabilmente preppy.
1 – JENNIFER CAVALLERI (Love Story)
I won’t offend your intelligence so I’ll presume everyone knows who Jennifer is. I’ll just let Oliver describe her as he does in the book : “What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died?That she was beautiful. And brilliant. That she loved Mozart and Bach. And the Beatles. And me. Once, when she specifically Jumped me with those musical types, I asked her what the order was, and she replied, smiling, - Alphabetical.” This movie has been “the movie” of its decade and Jennifer’s simple and elegant style is still the best preppy style example. She was sweet and naïve although very smart. There was no malice in her. She loved plaid pattern and long blazers in mellowed shades and barely wore any jewelry.		Non volendo offendere la vostra intelligenza, darò per scontato che sappiate tutti chi è Jennifer. Lascerò che sia Oliver a descriverla: “Cosa dire di una ragazza di venticinque anni che è morta? Che era bella. E brillante. Che amava Mozart e Bach. E i Beatles. E me. Una volta quando mi inserì proprio tra quei generi musicali, le chiesi che ordine avesse usato, lei rispose sorridendo, - Alfabetico.” Questo film è stato “il film” della sua decade e lo stile semplice ed elegante di Jennifer rimane ancora oggi il migliore esempio di preppy style. Lei era dolce ed ingenua ma al contempo molto intelligente. Totalmente priva di malizia.  Amava i tessuti a quadri e le giacche al ginocchio di colori chiari,  raramente indossava gioielli.
2  – BLAIRE WALDORF (Gossip Girl)
Gossip Girl true star: the one and only Blaire Waldorf. I miss her. Rich and beautiful, Blair is a devoted friend and straight student. Betrayals and her need for love guide her actions. She struggle with her feeling for her dandy soul mate (Chuck) and sometimes can be a real bitch. Blair loves fashion more than anything, she always wears  the perfect outfit and hairdo for every occasion. She is a classy and sophisticated spoiled girl but her feigned manners barely hide her golden heart.  She dresses in all color and dare complete her outfit with bold accessorizes. Her headbands are just history. You may find many alike items at reasonable price and make your own preppy outfit as classy as Blaire’s unique modern prep style.		La vera star Gossip Girl: la sola ed unica Blaire Waldorf. Ne sento la mancanza. Ricca e bella, è un’amica affezionata e d una studentessa diligente. I tradimenti subiti ed il suo bisogno d’ affetto  guidano le sue azioni. Ha sentimenti altalenanti per la sua anima gemella dallo stile dandy (Chuck) e talvolta sa essere  veramente infida. Blair ama la moda più di ogni altra cosa, il suo abbigliamento ed acconciatura sono sempre adatti all’occasione. È una ragazza di classe, viziata e sofisticata ma le sue maniere affettate nascondono a malapena il suo cuore d’oro. Nel vestire utilizza molti colori diversi e le piace  osare nel dare il tocco finale al suo outfit grazie ad accessori vistosi. I suoi cerchietti sono semplicemente storia. Si possono trovare capi simili ai suoi ad un prezzo ragionevole e creare un  outfit preppy di classe personalizzato proprio come quello unico di Blaire.
3 – SPENCER HASTINGS (Pretty Little Liars)
PLL has so many cliché you can find there a good example for everything. Spencer Hastings is a very intelligent and rich girl who doesn’t seems to get along with his parents and sister. She is the smartest of her circle of friends and sometimes can be single minded.  She is the perfect example of preppy with her blazers and cardigans. Her male watch and flat shoes simply complete the look. She favors dark color and leather belts.  Spencer’s style, in the right measure,  is an evergreen classic.		PLL è pieno di tanti di quei clichè che puoi trovarci esempi praticamente di tutto. Spencer Hastings è una ragazza ricca ed intelligente che non va molto d’accordo con I genitori e la sorella. È la più intelligente del suo gruppo di amiche e qualche volta può risultare ossessiva. Con i suoi blazer e cardigan, è un esempio perfetto dello stile preppy. Il suo orologio maschile e le ballerine, rifiniscono ulteriormente il suo look. Predilige i colori scuri e le cinture di pelle. Lo stille di Spencer, nella giusta misura, è un classico senza tempo.
4 – CORDELIA CHASE (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
She is the one who can make school a real Hell and not because your school is built just above the Hellmouth. Driven by her selfish needs Cordelia Chase will, mostly unwillingly, join Buffy and his friends in their fight against vampires and other monsters.  She is rich, beautiful and so very spoiled. She always  dresses perfectly with classy accessorizes. She likes to wear nice couture dresses and is able to run on her heels. Pastel tones clothing and big bags are her favorite items. I’s been more than 10 years since BTVS ended but Cordelia’s preppy style is still actual.		Questa ragazza può rendere al scuola un vero inferno e  non perché la scuola è stata costruita sulla bocca dell’inferno. Guidata da bisogni egoistici, Cordelia si unirà, non molto volentieri, a Buffy ed i suoi amici nella loro lotta conto vampiri e mostri. Lei è ricca, bella e profondamente viziata. Si veste sempre in modo perfetto e con  accessori di classe. Le piace indossare graziosi abiti firmati ed è in grado di correre sui tacchi. Indumenti dai colori pastello e borse voluminose sono tra i suoi capi preferiti. Sono passati più di dieci anni da quando BTVS è terminato ma lo stile preppy di Cordelia è ancora attuale.
4 – LYDIA MARTIN (Teen Wolf)
Last but not least (she is my Preppy style favorite ever) this girl is hardly smart, she is brilliant. Beautiful, bossy, spoiled and – thank god – always so well dressed, Lydia is a high school teenager in a city full of werewolves and other otherworldly creatures. Bitten by a werewolf she eventually transform in a banshee and is almost driven crazy by the power to foresee death. Ironic and always with the right answer , she has a tender heart and falls in love way too easily for guys undeserving of her attentions.  She is tough and gorgeous. She likes to wear skirt and dresses. Even though she never wear sexy clothes, she manage to be sensual and elegant at the same time. Plain colors or bizarre patterns, her dresses are always fancy and classy. She even style her hair  according on her outfit: straight or curly her hair are always perfect.  Have I already told you she is my favorite?		Per ultimo ma non ultimo (è la mia icona del preppy style preferita) questa ragazza non è semplicemente intelligente, lei è brillante. Bella, autoritaria, viziata e – grazie a Dio – sempre ben vestita, Lydia è una studentessa delle superiori in una città popolata da lupi mannari e creature soprannaturali. Morsa da un lupo mannaro finisce per trasformarsi in una banshee ed è quasi portata alla follia dalla abilità di vedere la morte che acquisisce nel processo di trasformazione. Ironica e sempre con la risposta pronta, ha un cuore tenero e tende ad innamorarsi troppo facilmente di ragazzi che non meritano il suo affetto. È una ragazza forte  e meravigliosa. Predilige gonne e vestitini. Nonostante non indossi mai indumenti sexy, riesce sempre ad essere sensuale ed elegante al tempo stesso. Tinte unite o fantasie bizzarre, i suoi abiti sono sempre adorabili e di classe. È anche solita abbinare l’acconciatura all'abito: lisci o mossi i suoi capelli sono sempre perfetti. Vi ho già detto che è la mia preferita?

BOHO STYLE AND TV-SHOWS: quando troppo è davvero troppo?

Un bravo costumista sa che deve riuscire a mostrare i tratti di personalità peculiari di un personaggio già nella scelta del costume. È una regola d’oro, spesso una necessità,che però ha i suoi risvolto negativi: il rischio di stereotipare il personaggio.

Quando vediamo un personaggio vestito in una certa maniera, già ci siamo fatti un’idea di come lui o lei sia fatto.

Questo è l’identikit di un personaggio femminile dallo stile bohemian/boho-chic:

Si tratta di un’anima antica. È una ragazza timida, intensa e mossa da passioni profonde. È una persona che si prende cura degli altri  ed ama la Poesia ed i vecchi film. Probabilmente legge molta narrativa, in particolare quella dell’800.  Questo personaggio vede il mondo e le persone intorno a lei migliori di come sono effettivamente, spesso attraverso la lente di una macchina fotografica.

Di solito si innamora di qualcuno che non la nota (almeno da principio) o le nasconde un terribile segreto.

In sostanza, quando troviamo un personaggio vestito in style Boho, già sappiamo che probabilmente lei è intelligente ma anche dolce. 

Ho identificato alcuni tratti ricorrenti nei personaggi che vengono vestiti in questo modo.  Adesso andremo ad analizzare alcuni personaggi della televisione e del cinema per vedere se c’è corrispondenza tra il profilo dello stile e quello dei tratti di personalità.

A good stylist knows that he has to show the character’s most peculiar personality trait by choosing the right outfit.

This is a golden rule but, even though it is often a necessity, it also has a big downside: the risk to stereotype the character.

When you look at  a character dressed in a specific way, you already acknowledge something about it/her.

This is the identikit of a bohemian/boho-chic style character:

She is an old soul. She is bashful, intense, moved by deep passions. She is a caring person who loves poetry and old movies. She probably reads lots of literature, mostly from the ‘800. She sees the word and the people around her better than they actually are, most of the times through the camera lens.

She is in love with someone who doesn’t notice her (at the beginning – at the very least) or is hiding a big  secret.

Basically, when you see a character dressed up in boho style, you just know she probably is smart but also sweet.

I found a few recurring traits in boho-dressed characters. Now I’d like to analyze 4 characters from both cinema and tv to see if there is a correspondence between the stile profile and the personality traits.

1 – ARIA MONTGOMERY  (Pretty Little Liars)

Aria è un personaggio della serie Pretty Little Liars. È una ragazza tranquilla che ama leggere e scattare fotografie. I parenti di Aria stanno divorziando e lei si occupa del fratello minore. Lei e le sue amiche sono tormentate da un misterioso A che è a conoscenza di tutti i loro segreti e minaccia di rovinare le loro vite.  Aria si innamora di un uomo che si rivela un professore del suo liceo e che le nasconde una terribile verità. Nonostante sia dolce e premurosa non manca decisamente di personalità.

Questa piccoletta ha decisamente stile. 

La sua vena bohemien è ravvivata da toni dark (alcune volte più punk di altre).

È possibile che esageri un pochino troppo spesso ma questa è una delle ragioni che la rendono uno dei miei personaggi preferiti.

È eccentrica, senza dubbio, ma il suo combinare capi arditi con tocchi di femminilità, la rende unica.Indossa stampe di teschi con cardigan rosa, un tubino rosso con tacchi vertiginosi, un abito velato con gli anfibi riuscendo sempre ad essere sexy e dolce. I capelli di Aria sono acconciati in complicate pettinature e ama molto cappelli e cerchietti. Porta gioielli vistosi e solitamente indossa un arcobaleno di colori.

Non credo che le persone vestano come lei (o che dovrebbero) ma ci sono tanti ottimi spunti da cui si potrebbero prenderne un paio da abbinare al nostro solito look.

Aria è il personaggio di un programma televisivo, questo permette ai costumisti di divertirsi nel vestirla (credo si divertano davvero) e di esagerare ad ogni episodio.

 Aria is a fictional character from Pretty Little Liars. She is a quite girl who loves to read and take photos. Aria’s parents are divorcing and she takes care of his troubled little brother. She and her friends are harassed by a mysterious A who knows all their secrets and threat to ruin their lives. She falls in love with a guy who happens to be her teacher and is hiding a terrible truth from her. Although she is sweet and thoughtful she definitely doesn’t lack personality.

This tiny girl definitely has style.

Her bohemian undertone is highlighted by a dark touch (sometimes more punk than others).

She may exaggerate quite too often but that’s one of the many reasons I love her the most.  She is eccentric, surely, but her combining  strong bold clothes with girlish touches makes her unique.

She wears skull patterns with a pink sweaters, a red sheath with high heels, a sheer dress with a pair of combat boots and still manage to be both sweet and sexy.  Aria’s hair are combed in complex hairdos and she seems to like hats and headbands, her jewelry makes a statement and she is a rainbow of colors.

I don’t think people dress like her (or they should) but there are so many good hints we could definitely pick one or two ideas from her unlikely outfits and match those with our usual clothes. 

This is a character from a tv-show, that’s why customers can have fun (and I think they definitely do) dressing her up and exaggerating in every single episode. 

 

 

2 – VANESSA  ABRAMS (Gossip Girl)

Nell’ Upper East Side di Manhattan tutte le ragazze sono ricche e belle. 

Vanessa non ne fa parte ma si trova aggrovigliata in questo mondo quando si mette in contatto con  il suo amico d’infanzia. È una ragazza molto intelligente, divertente, colta e con una passione per il Cinema.Per quanto possa essere intelligente, è comunque ancora troppo ingenua rispetto ai suoi coetanei privilegiati.

Alla fine ottiene l’amore del suo amico d’infanzia (che ama da sempre) ma solo per un breve momento poiché non è lei il suo vero amore. 

Intelligente e bella, Vanessa normalmente predilige colori allegri e bigiotteria voluminosa. Il suo stile Bohemian potrà essere troppo orientaleggiante ma mette in risalto la sua pelle abbronzata ed i suoi occhi blu.

In the Upper East Side of Manhattan all the girls are rich and beautiful. Vanessa doesn’t come from there but she finds herself entwined in this word when she reaches to his childhood best friends. She is a very smart girl, she is fun and cultivated and has a passion for the Cinema. For all her intelligence, she still is too naïve for this privileged people. She eventually wins the love of her childhood friend (whom she loves since forever) but for a short time since, in the end, she is not his true love.

Smart and gorgeous, Vanessa usually like cheerful clothing and statement jewelry. Her Bohemian style may be too much oriental but it draws attention to her tanned skin and blue eyes.

3 – LINDY OWENS (Beastly)

In questa versione moderna di La Bella e la Bestia, Lindy – come Belle – è volontariamente prigioniera nel palazzo della Bestia. 

È una ragazza dolce, affettuosa e piena di sogni. Lindy, pian piano, si innamora nella Bestia che altri non è che il compagno di scuola di cui era segretamente innamorata all’ inizio della storia.Tutto nel suo aspetto dice che è la dolcezza fatta persona. Tipica ragazza della porta accanto,  veste principalmente in colori pastello e non usa molti accessori. È la quintessenza della semplicità ma al tempo stesso è molto femminile.

In this modern version of the Beauty and the Beast, Lindy - like Belle - is a  voluntary prisoner in the Beast’s mansion. 

She is sweet and caring and full of dreams. She slowly falls in love with the Beast who eventually transforms back in the school mate she was in love with at the beginning of the story. Everything in her appearance says she is the sweetest thing ever. All around the girl next door, she  dresses mostly in pastel color and doesn’t use many accessories. She is as simple as simple could be but, at the same time, very girlish.

4 – SARAH HART (I am number four)

Un tempo cheerleader ed ora ostracizzata dagli amici di un tempo, Sarah è una ragazza semplice e timida. 

Ama scattare foto ed il suo aspetto fragile racchiude una volontà di ferro. È l’unico vero amore del protagonista della storia, che si rivelerà essere un alieno. 

Sarah combatte per aiutarlo ma alla fine lui è costretto a lasciarla in attesa che un giorno ritorni da lei.

Stampe floreali e capelli sono decisamente il suo tratto distintivo. Utilizza toni pastello e bigiotteria essenziale. Sarah modella i suoi capelli in boccoli naturali. Nonostante sia il cliché della bellezza del sud (america) veste perfettamente il suo ruolo.

Once a cheerleader now ostracized by her former friends, Sarah is a shy and simple girl. 

She loves taking pictures and her delicate appearance hides a strong will. She is the one true love of the main characters who happens to be an alien. She fights to help him but in the end he is forced to leave her waiting for him to come back.
